Black History Month: Shirley Chisholm’s fight to be first

Shirley_Chisholm

Leaving her mark no matter what.

The year 1969 would see the first black woman elected to Congress in the House of Representatives. This I learned from Dayo Olopade’s History of Black Women In Politics Part I, an article analyzing the dynamics of women rising to political power.

It might surprise you to learn Hilary Clinton is not the first woman to seek the presidential nomination for the Democratic Party. According to Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 Presidential Campaign by Jo Freeman, it is actually Chisholm who became the first woman and African-American to do so.

Making such strides did not come easy. She survived three assassination attempts on her life, Don Swaby wrote. It left Chisholm more determined than ever to leave the White House making a statement her peers could learn from. During her term, Chisholm made sure all those she hired for office were women, half of them black.

Blissany Cherry should use Shirley Chisholm as her inspiration.

In the fantasy romance Superheroes Wear Faded Denim, Blissany is just another young woman looking to fall in love and graduate college. Fighting an intergalactic war to save mankind does not make her list of top ten things to do.  It doesn’t even sound like a video game she would want to play. Yet when the love of her life becomes a target for evil, she has to overcome her fears and become what she never believed she could be, a warrior.

God’s Valentine to you: Step out on faith

God's valentine

Proverb 28:27: “He who gives to the poor will lack nothing.”

I enjoy tithing. Why? Because I truly believe God will do what He says He will do.  When I read Mark 4:20, “Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop –thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times what is sown,” I know every time I plant a seed God is going to grow me a forest.

Now as a fantasy romance author, you should already know I am a big dreamer. I give my characters big things, and I expect God to give me even bigger things. It took me about twenty years to realize if I want God to move miraculously in my life, then I need to step out on faith and move miraculously in others.

So I find myself searching to bless others as if I am superman, hungry to love like Christ loves.

In mid-January, God told me to find people at local bus stops in Northeast Florida, ask Him who I should bless, and just give them money. How awesome is that? I do it because let’s get real. I’m not trying to be the one surviving in this world till my eternal bed is made. I’m ready for the fullness of Christ, and I’m trying to receive it today. Jesse Duplantis, a southern preacher who lives by the words of Mark 11:24, “Therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe you have received it, and it will be yours,” preached at Faith Christian Center one day. He preached on God blessing him abundantly and beyond, speaking on what I am blogging about right now.  At the time I heard his message, I was fed up with my mediocre relationship with God. Now me being the demanding person I am, I was demanding more.

Whenever I read the Bible, I don’t think, ‘Oh this is a nice story.’ I think, ‘God, why aren’t you doing this for me?’ or ‘I want that’, or ‘God, you said you’d do this. I’m waiting.’ So when Duplantis finally told me the key, I instantly became good soil and soaked up his message.

Now tithing means several things to me. Many preach solely on giving money to our respective churches. This is true, but many of the people who need help are outside of the church. That is why it is important for me to ask God daily, how can I go beyond just giving money to church? How can I do your will.

God might say something as small as, give your neighbor a bright smile every morning.

Then get ready.  Your relationship with God will become a marriage.  Then you’ll have a right to make a list filled with the desires of your heart because Proverbs 25:28 says, “He who trusts in the Lord will prosper”, and Psalm 37:4-6 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of you heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this; He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the Justice of your cause like the noonday.”

Read God’s Valentine to you: He will do for you exactly what he said.

Black History Month: Kerry Washington makes history with Scandal

Kerry Washington

Taking today by storm.

This whole blog could be dedicated to Kerry Washington’s resume. Steve Harvey said while hosting the NAACP awards, she is the first black actress to hold a lead role in a primetime drama. I joke with my family the ABC television show Scandal should be called Homewrecker. Women who steal other women’s men should have a red A sewn in their shirts, but that aside, it is addictive. Every time I logon to social media, someone’s facebooking or tweeting about the latest episode. If they are not talking about Scandal, then they are boasting about Django Unchained.

Washington’s talent has landed her several big name movies. Ray and The Last King of Scotland are just to name a few. With every great role Washington takes on, this powerful actress makes history.

Fans of Eve Ensler, the author of The Vagina Monologues, will also be thrilled to learn Washington is a member of V-Day, an organization focused on ending violence against women. I was heavily involved in V-Day in college, so learning this just made me like Washington even more. Who will be catching Scandal this Wednesday?

Let me know.

If Superheroes Wear Faded Denim were being turned into a movie, Kerry Washington would definitely be Cassandra Williams.

Cassandra Williams is a beautiful and talented dancer who is well adept when it comes to love. Blissany Cherry on the other hand is an utter dating catastrophe. When the first hot guy to return her affections is stolen by her best friend Demi, she is desperate to win him back. There’s only one problem. She has no sex appeal whatsoever. Thank goodness Cassandra is Demi’s arch nemesis and is willing to use all she knows to train Blissany in the art of war and love.

God’s Valentine to you: He will do for you exactly what he said.

God's valentine

Psalms 91:14-16: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Some people will face tragedy in February, while others will have the best time of their life. Some people will feel lonely. Some will have nothing special happen to them at all. Whatever happens, before the month ends, I want to remind you of God’s Valentine to you.

February is one of my favorite months. As Justin Bieber said on SNL, it is the month of Blacks and love. Well, he didn’t quite say it like that.

It came to me this Valentine’s Day to spend time celebrating God’s love. He is love, stronger than any man or woman’s. Even when people failed me, I have found His love to be unfailing even in the toughest of times. When I need something, all I have to do is turn to Him. He gives me the deepest desires of my heart. He teaches me His way and draws me closer.

I grew up in the church, but here’s the funny thing about church. You can go everyday and not be much of a Christian. Sometimes I would step out in faith only to think things will not work out. God knew I was trying though. He always meets you where you’re at, so even in my doubt, God still moved for me. Now I have learned to trust in Him fully. He will be good to me just because I believe in Him.

Life can sometimes become so hard we forget God loves us. I know I have once or twice or three times. I’m not ashamed to admit it.

One thing I have learned is to seek God at all times. When He is telling you He is going to do big things for you, don’t doubt it one bit, just receive it. Keep it to yourself if it sounds too crazy. Your closest friends and family can instill some of the strongest doubt even when they do not always mean to do so. Unless God is using you as a vehicle to help someone else, what He has told you is meant for you, and only you need to believe it. God is going to do exactly what He said. Just remember Luke 1:45, a verse that talks about Mary, but can be applied to you: “Blessed is she who believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.”

For those who are in need of more spiritual ministering I recommend both Your Best Life Now by Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer’s The Battlefield of the Mind.

Fantasy novelist Eden Glenn: Turning the bad into great!

DarkindPromises_Cover

What began as a mechanism to survive cancer flourished into a successful writing career.

Miss. Eden Glenn, author of the fantasy erotica Dar’kind Promises, turned a hobby into a source of profit. Landing a publishing contract with Rebel Ink Press, she glows with prospects of new releases and more book deals. Read the interview below. Maybe it will be the inspiration you need to finally throw out those novice shoes and become the writing professional you have always dreamed.

Straight from the author’s mouth: Turning the bad into great!

I could write a whole book just to discuss each of these questions. LOL! I’ll give it a try. The hardest part of being a writer is being concise, isn’t it? I will fail miserably, but perhaps I can be entertaining and insightful. Here goes.

1. Can you talk about your journey as a writer?

I started writing in 2005 while battling breast cancer. I had to have something to occupy my thoughts that were NOT the reality of what I was dealing with.

2011 started my career with Rebel Ink Press. I’ve published with them four times now. I have a short novelette coming out 2/3/13 and another 4/17/13. I’m under contract with them for several more shorts in 2013. I’m working toward building a readership. Late in 2013 or 2014 “Dragon’s Mark” will find a real title instead of this working title. It will get an overhaul of edits and become my debut novel with Rebel Ink if they accept it.

2. How long did it take to complete your novel? Can you talk about your writing process?

I write a novel a year. Three to five months to write the draft and the rest of the year to edit and polish.

3. Any editing tips?

Bio picture

I could write a whole blog on editing tips. We’ll have to save that for another

day, or I’ll bore your readers to death. I will give you one writing tip. I learned

this from an interview I read with Hemmingway. WRITE UNTIL YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT.

4. Who are some of your favorite authors, and how have they

inspired your writing?

Everyone I read inspires me. I have an extensive library.

5. What do you love most about the writing industry? What do you dislike?

I love that the industry is wide open with the advent of e-readers. What was

foretold to be a passing fad–Snort–I hate that the industry is wide open with the advent of e-readers.

6. Do you have any other books or new releases that you would wish to talk about?

I have a busy year. 2/3/13 “Dar’kind Promises” the short novella I’m promoting today releases. Two more stories follow that one in 2013. The second, “Dragon’s Unbound” is in edits. It is something a bit like Goldilocks and the three dragons. It’s in draft stage. Not titled yet. On 4/17/13 “Beverly’s Secret” vol 2 in “The Amethyst Desire Collection” comes out. I have stories following in the collection throughout 2013 and 2014. Vol 3 “Phoenix Reborn” is in final edits with me. Vol 4 “Shifter’s (something or other)” Untitled is in the draft stage.

7. If you could share one tip you learned with self-published and traditionally published authors who share the same dream of being a successful author what would it be?

First, write a good story. Then, ruthlessly edit that story until it is well polished. Don’t put some self-published crap up there and use the reviews people post to polish it. Can you tell that is a pet peeve? LOL!

Must Love Vampires – 2 out of 5

Must Love Vampires

I like the cover! Tell me more!

Nightclub dancer Chloe Lamoureaux just met the man of her dreams: Aidan Raines is charming, considerate, rich, and hot. Of course, he’s a little mysterious about his age. And his favourite drink. And he’s not much for sunlight. But he’s asked her to marry him, and she’s ready to do it. Her identical twin sister, Chuck, isn’t so sure. Maybe being a tabloid reporter has skewed her judgment, but to Chuck, Aidan and his brother Sebastian look like honest-to-Dracula vampires. Especially Sebastian: beguiling, seductive, and just a hint of dangerous. Maybe she wouldn’t mind him taking a little taste. But with Chloe’s life in the balance, she has to know – do they want hot love or hot blood? Or maybe…a little of both?

Review Must Love Vampires – 2 out of 5

If you are looking for a light, easy read then Must Love Vampires is perfect for you. I could not get through the book.  The characters just did not fit my personality. Add a weak plot, and I could not make it to the last page.  On the other hand, Heidi Betts has a huge sense of humor and it showed in her tone, making it a possible selection for those avid romance readers.

For the rest of us fellow plot fiends, here is why I am such a downer on Must Love Vampires.  Within the covers are two short stories that equal one book. Both short stories are tied together by the protagonists, Chloe and Chuck, two twin sisters running around a Las Vegas casino. Even though the stories are separate, the plots amount to the same thing.  A financially distressed, beautiful woman having embarked on a quest for financial stability, meets a wealthy stud in the process. After discovering her mate is a vampire, she freaks out only enough that sex is still an option.  Happy ever after with the possibility of marriage.

So the plot has some potential. However, although I will date a guy solely for looks and material reasons, if he turns out to be a blood sucker I would probably hold off on my wedding plans. At least until I made sure the guy was the next Edward Cullen. Not the next Dracula 2000, a terrible movie by the way.

To make matters worst, Chloe has a child. Does this give me the conflict I crave? No. Chloe just happens to not be the most responsible parent on earth.  It makes sense for her character, but does little to intensify the conflict.

This book is not for those who enjoy true-to-life characters and strong plot. Still, heavy readers of romance should find this to be cute read.
